About the Artist

Susan Maley Rash has been painting since childhood. Though art was not a part of Susan’s career trajectory, her passion for it has only grown over the years. She re-discovered her love of painting watercolors when her son was born. Although her career in insurance often “got in the way” of her fun work as an artist, Susan continued taking classes and workshops and added oil painting back into her repertoire in 2006.

“My artwork is often described as happy, vibrant, bold and colorful”. The influence of travel is evident in her work, from French iris fields to rolling hills in Italy to window boxes in Charleston. Floral designs, impressionist still lifes, reflective glass and cocktails are all motifs Susan enjoys weaving throughout her pieces.

The art Susan creates isn’t just for her personal enjoyment or commercial rewards. Susan donates many works for local non-profits to raise funds for their charities, including the American Cancer Society, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, Connor’s Heroes and Little Hands of Virginia.

As a graduate of Salem College in Winston-Salem NC, her alma mater is dear to Susan’s heart. She served on the Salem Board of Visitors and loves to walk the brick pathways on the beautiful grounds. Her series of Salem prints can be found on her website: susanmaleyrashart.com

The “Salem Collection” now numbers eleven works which alumnae are actively collecting. In 2022, Salem Academy and College celebrated its 250th anniversary. It is the oldest female educational establishment in the country that is still a women’s college. “Main Hall” captures the vibrant sunlight of Salem Square with flags of the “250th Journey to Salem” fluttering above the steps of its namesake.
